OurStory

At Hogen Adams, our roots in Indian country run deep. Every day, we address issues of jurisdiction, sovereignty, and tribal governments. In between the cases, deals, and resolutions, we are surrounded with art that represents where we come from and the clients we serve.

BILL

Bill served as the lead attorney for the Saginaw Chippewa Indian Tribe of Michigan’s successful reservation-boundary treaty case. At the conclusion of the case, the Tribe celebrated the hard-fought victory with a feast and blanket ceremony, where Tribal leadership presented Bill with this blanket featuring the seal of the Tribe and an Ojibwe floral motif.

VANYA

President Calvin Coolidge visited Pine Ridge in the summer of 1927, and it just so happened that Joe Brown, grandfather of Of Counsel Phil Hogen, and great-grandfather of Member Vanya S. Hogen, was right up front to witness it. Joe is at the far left wearing the “newsboy” hat.

ANDREW

The Muscogee Nation and other southeastern tribes play stickball—a game of great spiritual and cultural significance. Stickball is often referred to as “the little brother of war,” and was used to settle disputes between Muscogee tribal towns. Andrew uses the pictured sticks when he plays stickball at his tribal town.

LEAH

When she graduated high school, her grandparents gifted Leah this woven ash basket. The basket’s color comes from chokecherry juice, the same juice that dyed her fingers red during the long summers she spent on the White Earth Indian Reservation.

LORENZO

Linda Sharon Skolnick (Fort Sill Chiricahua Warm Springs Apache), Lorenzo’s grandmother, is a renowned multidisciplinary artist known as Okee-Chee (Delaware for little blue bird). In this untitled painting, her signature horse invokes courage and resilience. This piece hangs in Lorenzo’s office and reminds him to think creatively and work passionately to serve Indian County and his community.
